Stating your own business.......it's not that easy as you think *ahem* *ahem*

04/05/07

This week was actually a really, really long week. So happy to find out that today is Friday. Today's computer class was a long day because we learned a lot of stuff today that's going to help us for the summative. We were actually supposed to look at two websites to learn more information about creating your business. Down below you can find some information about some topics.

Registering your business name: this is self explanatory. Over here, you have to register your business name. But there are few rules that you have to follow for this. If your business name is your actual name then you don't have to register. There is a specific fee to register your business name and that is $60 if your registering through Ontario Business Connects and $80 if your registering through mail. The name will expire in 5 years. Also, before you register the name you have to make sure that no one else has that name. If they do then you have to find another one. You have to pay $12 to check if your name is actually in use or not.

Taxes (income tax): you have to pay both the provincial and federal government. This money is based to how much profit you make minus the amount of your expenses. Expenses like
office rent and maintenance, mortgage interest and property taxes on property you own and use in your business, leased equipment, cost of buying or manufacturing any goods you sell, delivery, freight and transportation expenses, utilities, insurance premiums, fees for licences and permits fees for membership in a trade or commercial association, legal, accounting and other, professional fees, advertising, travel, employee salaries, etc.

Business records: you are supposed to keep a book of records by law. You're supposed to keep them for six years after you have did your taxes. If you have a good accountant then he or she will do that for you.

Licenses: for most of the businesses you need to get a licence from either federal, municipal or provincial government. The licence includes things like the location of your business and the qualifications of your employees.

Zoning: "All municipalities have zoning and building regulations" You have to check with your municipality authorities.

Insurance: what if you make a damage in your business? Then insurance is what protects you from it. There are many different types of insurances. Some of them are property insurance, business interruption insurance, general liability insurance, key person insurance, disability insurance, errors and omissions insurance. There is an agent or broker who would arrange the insurance for you.

Renting or buying premises: if you don't have a home-based business then you need to rent or buy premises. In order to decide if either you need to rent or buy premises you need to look at a couple of things. Some of them are: what kind of space you're looking for, security, parking, the amount of money you're willing to pay, etc. If you decide to rent a place instead of buying it then you have to sign a lease with the owner. On the other hand if you decide to buy it then you need to find a real estate agent.

Business communications: communication is really important in businesses. You have to be able to interact with your customers in one way or another. You can get some business tools like: computer/laptops, some kind of software (word processing, accounting, presentations, videoconferencing), a cell phone, etc. It's also good to have some kind of website for your customers.

Hiring employees: when you first start your business you may not need employees but you may want to think of them as your business gets bigger and better. When you start to hire employees you may want to look at a couple of things. They are: paying them on a regularly, training your employees, maintaining the records of your employees, etc. Also, you have to look at the Employment Standards Act which includes things like: hours of work, minimum wage, public holidays, overtime pay, vacation pay, benefit plans, pregnancy leave and parental leave, etc.

ADs......ADs........and more ADs

25/04/07

Yesterday some people went on the Quebec trip so now we have less people in all of our classes. This post is a filler for yesterday and today. Yesterday we spent the first half checking if the prices of our shares went up or down and if we have lost money or gained them! I lost $62.00 but it's o.k because I'm sure that I will gain money as the days pass by! We spent the other half of our class working on our flyers.

Today Ms. Griffiths and Mr. Case was absent so Ms. Brooking was our supply. We were given the whole class to work on our ad for one of the subjects. So how the day went. Once again this is the last computer class for this week because both tomorrow and the day after tomorrow is a day 4 which means no computers. So see you on Monday. Stay ALIVE!

OMG........MICROSOFT OFFICE again!!!!!!!

23/04/07

Today we learned about Microsoft Publisher which is one of the programs in Microsoft Office. Microsoft Publisher is one of the easiest programs but one of the programs that not much people have. This program is basically used to create newsletters, brochures, flyers, etc. Just like Microsoft Powerpoint, this also has templates for newsletters, etc. But Mr. Case that it will be better if you make your template because it will be boring for the viewer to see the same template again and again.

Our new assignment is to create either a flyer, newsletter or a brochure for one of the grade 9 subjects in Woodbine. At the moment I'm not sure about what subject to choose but I will soon!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! (can't think of anything for the title)

18/04/07

Today we didn't really do anything. We were just supposed to complete the chart for the five companies that we picked. After you finished it you were supposed to put it in the drop off folder. That's pretty much it other than that today is the last computer class for this week because tomorrow is a day 4 which means we don't have computers and Friday is a PA day. So see you guys on Monday! BYE!!!!!!

GOIN......GOIN.......GOIN......AWAY!!!!!!!

17/04/07

Today I wasn't in class because all of the business classes were on a trip to Toyota Plants. Well, according to me the trip was not that great but it was worth of missing a few classes. The most boring part was the bus ride. It took almost 2 hours to get there and to make it even more boring we had a seating plan so we couldn't get to sit with our friends. But on the way back to school we played games and all so it was fun!

Now about the trip! The place we went today is called TMMC (Toronto Motor Manufacturing Company) First when we arrived at TMMC we were shown a short video about TMMC and were explained couple of the safety rules we have to follow until we are still in TMMC.

After that we were taken to the manufacturing place to give us a tour. The tour was o.k. Not that great and not that boring. So overall the trip was fine.

MONEY.......MONEY.......MONEY

16/04/07

Today we learned about business! There are three types of businesses: Sole Proprietorships, Partnerships and Corporations.

Sole proprietorships: this type of business that is owned by one person. All of the profits and the loses will go to that person. If the business is being owned by more than one person then it's not a sole proprietorship.

Partnerships: this is a type of business where two or more people wished to do business together. Each partner will have to give their share of money or property and give their professional contribution of either work or expertise. If there's only one partner in the business and no one else joins in 120 days then the partnership will be closed.

Corporations: this type of business that is made up of individual share holders. One of the most important goals for each corporation is to operate for profit.

Source: http://www.revenu.gouv.qc.ca/eng/entreprise/demarrage/types/index.asp

After learning about the three types of businesses we were assigned a project...AGAIN! The project is: we are each given $100,000 and we have to use this money to buy shares from 5 different companies. One of the websites you can use to check the prices of stocks, etc is www.tsx.com. After we decide what companies to buy from we then make a chart that includes: company name, date, value per share, amount of shares bought, and the symbol of the company. Every Tuesday and Friday you have to check the prices of shares again because it will change. You need check for 6 weeks. After the 6 weeks, you have to make a presentation to class saying what company you picked and if you lost money or gained money. HAVE FUN!!!!

MESS UP........MESS UP.......ha ha now it's my turn!!!!!

10/04/07

Today we continued working on our photoshop project which is to mess up one or all of the teacher's pictures that was given to us. I put Mr. Case on Lisa and Maggie's head, Mr. Griffiths on Marge's head, Mr. Stratsma on Bart's head and Mr. Woicik on Homer's head. All of these characters are from the TV show "The Simpson". I luckily finished mine today but the bell is almost going to ring so maybe I'll hand it tomorrow! Down below you can see the image that I photoshoped. Hope you like it!!!!!

Test Day................

04/04/07

I finally finished writing the HTML test! The test was o.k. It wasn't hard and it wasn't easy. I think I wrote a lot for the test because I finished writing the test and I looked up and there was only 2 other people who were still writing. I kind of felt embarrassed but I felt better after a while. I'm so happy right now because first I finished writing the test and next my birthday is approaching in 2 days. I’m finally going to be 15 like the other old people. Today's the last class of btt before the long, long weekend that's coming up. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!

HTML......WEBSITES...........& MORE

23/03/07

Couple of days ago we got a new project. The project is that we have to create a website for Woodbine using Macromedia. The website needs to be either for students, teachers, other schools or for all ages and it needs to make people come to Woodbine J.H.S. There are two different things that you can do in Macromedia. One you can either type in the code and it will create the rest for you or two you can insert the title and images you want and it will create the html codes for you.

Macromedia is a really expensive program so Mr. Case advised us not to buy it. But there are other free programs that you can use to do this project. For example Page breeze. This project is due next Monday. We'll see how my website turns out.

Hypidi........hypidi......hip

09/03/07

Today is the last day before march break. This has been a very, very long week. I'm so glad that it's almost over. I have a really big art project that's due on the day back. I just hope that I finish that on time. Also, we don't have any homework for computers other than contributing something to the wiki. I'm pretty sure I can write some articles for the wiki during the March break. That's pretty much it for now. See you after the break.

Short, Short, Very short notice!!!!!

06/03/07

Today we had a test on Photoshop. Mr. Case only told us yesterday that we have a test today so I'm not sure if I studied enough. Up to my knowledge the test was okay; not that easy and not that hard. Since we had the test today we didn't really do anything new. We should starting something new today.

From Scratch!!!!!!!!!!

26/02/07

Last couple of classes we were working on our image made from scratch. Our assignment was to create an image from scratch using adobe photoshop. I'm almost done mine; it just needs a couple of final touches. I'll probably finish it by tomorrow or so. We haven't started anything new. Only thing we have to do other than doing our picture is to do our blog and contribute something to the Wiki. So far I have written 2 articles and have wrote on couple of forums.

Monday, February 19, 2007

Ha ha Wikipedia.........even we could do it!!!!!!!!

19/02/07

Today we had a fun class even though it was Monday. Mr. Case made a wiki for our class. In our class I mean the two BTT classes. What is a wiki? You may be wondering. Well, a wiki is basically a community. In the wiki you can post information that can be seen by the other users of the wiki. An example of a wiki is Wikipedia.

Only bad thing about the wiki is that anyone can come and post stuff there but as people say "where there is a will there is a way". The way here is that the administrator of the wiki can delete stuff that are useless and he/or she is the only one who is allowed to do that.

The wiki can be found at www.woodbinejhs.ca/btt/wiki. This wiki includes things like forums, galleries, articles, and there's even blogs. One of the most important things that the wiki includes is a CHAT ROOM. Since the wiki was just made today it's not that fancy YET. But we will make it fancy as the days pass by. I think now I'll go and look at some of the other tools that are in the wiki.

More and more and more

12/02/07

Today we learned some more tools in Photoshop. Some of them are listed below.

Automate- Batch: this tool is used to change the type of picture. For example gif, jpeg, etc.

Automate- Contact Sheet: this tool is used to fit all of your pictures into one page based on how many rows and columns you want.

Automate-Picture Package: This tool is used to change the sizes of pictures. So for instant the resolution of your picture is 300 dpi and you want to put that picture in the Internet then you can use this tool to change the resolution to 72 dpi to make the file smaller.

We also looked at some more tools in the filter section. The filters are great tools because they're used to add effects to your image/picture. Some of the filters we looked at today are: pixelate, sharpen, and blur.

Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

09/02/07

Today was a catch-up period. We were either supposed to work on our photoshop project, essay, or on our blogs. I worked on my essay. Today was also Mr. Case's birthday! But he wasn't here to receive the birthday punches. Just kidding. Anyways, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. CASE! That's pretty much what we did today. My podcast is due on Monday and the essay is due on Wednesday! It's going to be a busy weekend for me. Good luck to me!!!!!

Bad Pictures....................Ewww, get away from me! Quick!!! Get the trash can!!!!

07/02/07

Today we continued our lesson about Photoshop. In other words today we learned about how to fix the bad pictures and make them look good.

One way to fix these pictures is adjusting the levels of each colour. You can either adjust the levels of red, green, blue, or all of them combined. You can do this by going to enhance which is located at the top of the window then going down to brightness/contrast and finally clicking on levels. Using this feature you can make the really ugly pictures look really really good.

Another thing that you can do to make your picture look better is either dodge it or burn it. Dodging it makes the image lighter and burning it makes the image darker. Try these techniques to make your picture look better. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

After this short lesson we were given a mini assignment.

The assignment is:

Mr. Case gave us two pictures that we were supposed to crop and change to the way we like. We were also supposed to pick a picture that we like and do the same thing. I'm not sure when this is due! But I think it's by the end of this class.

Pixels!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is that a type of fairy??????

06/02/07

Today we focused more on Photoshop. We learned about pixels. Pixel is one bit of information in a picture. A picture is made up of thousands of pixels. Each pixel has a different hexadecimal code. When you change the code you will change the bit of information in the picture.

When you print a picture one of the good numbers of pixels is 1800 by 1600. For uploading pictures to internet then the good number of pixels would be 72. If you have more pixels then there will be more details in the picture. It will be best if you reduce he amount of pixels before uploading the picture to the internet. If you do that then that would make the file size smaller so it will be faster and cheaper.

When you decrease the amount of pixels the computer throws away the bits that are not needed. After that if you zoom the picture it will be blurry because the computer already threw out the bits.

Another thing that we learned today is how to crop pictures. Crop pictures means that you take what you need from the picture and throw away what you don't need.

Photoshop

05/01/07

Sometimes a photographer might take a picture but you might not be totally satisfied with it. Have you ever wondered if there has been any program to fix your pictures? Well your dreams have come true. Photoshop is a program that you can use to fix your pictures. Today we learned about Photoshop. Thank god! I was waiting for this forever.

In school we'll be using Photoshop Elements instead of Photoshop because Mr. Case said that Photoshop has a lot of tools that we won't be using. Today we didn't do much in Photoshop instead we learned the "Rules of Composition" Down below you can see couple of the rules of composition.

The rules of composition:

1) The rules of thirds: this is one of the most important rules. For this rule you have to divide the picture into 9 sections which is 3 boxes by 3 boxes. This rule makes the picture not be the centre of attention which makes the picture more interesting to look at.

2) Simplicity: this is a really easy rule to understand. Just keep the picture as simple as possible. If there are a lot of complicated things in the background the person looking at the picture won't get your message. Simple is always the best!

3) Colour: this is one of the simplest rules. It works just as it sounds like. Colour is what give the emotion. For example, if some thing is sad then give it a dark colour and if some thing is happy then gives it a light colour.

4) Contrast: it can be either a light contrast or a dark contrast. So if your main object is light then give it a dark background and if your object is dark then give it a light background.

There are more rules of composition but these are the main ones. Try using these rules the next time you fix or create a picture! Good luck!!!!!!!!!

Hexadecimal..........................God knows what that means!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

02/02/07

Welcome to February! This is my first official post of this new month! Today we learned about Hexadecimal. Hexadecimal is a number system just like the binary number system just harder.

The difference between the binary number system and the hexadecimal number system is that the binary number system increases by multiplying by 2 and the hexadecimal number system increases by multiplying by 16. This is a lot harder. Down below you can see the three different kinds of number systems: base 10, binary, and hexadecimal.

: Base 10

: Binary

: Hexadecimal

The hexadecimal number system works kind of like the binary number system. For the hexadecima number system you can only put numbers between 1-9 in the columns. For numbers 10-15 you have to use the letters A-F.

A: 10

B: 11

C: 12

D: 13

E: 14

F: 15

For example if you want to place the number 19 then you would put a 1 under 16th column and a 3 under the ones column.

Most people use hexadeciaml to tell the values of RGB which stands for Red, Green and Blue which are the three primary colours. There are 255 levels of each colour. So 255*255*255 gives us 16.7 million combinations of colours.

This just gives me a heart attack. Well that's pretty much what we did today. See you next time!!!!!!!!!!!

Computer Hacking............ Everything gets lost

23/01/07

Today we were supposed to research an article about "Computer Hacking" and things related to it. The article that I found is called Defend Your (Virtual) Home by Pat Regnier and Jeanne Sahadi.

This article talks about how people hack your computer and ways to prevent it from happening.

Ways of preventing people from hacking your computer:

1) The "Administrator" account is the only account which you can do anything in. All of the other accounts only let you do some things. To do the other things you need the administrator's permission. So it will be best if you do all your work on another account and only use the administrator account only to install stuff and fix other accounts.

2) Have good passwords is another way to prevent hacking. Make your passwords really hard to guess. Keep your passwords really long, should be both numbers and letters, and don't make it a name. To check how strong your password is you can go to microsoft.com/protect. But don't keep your password that complicated because then it will make you hard to remember the password yourself. Whatever you do do not write the password down some where. Don't keep the same password all of your accounts. Keep different passwords.

3) Every time you visit a website a program in your internet records it. The sites that are recorded can be found when you click on history on the top of your Internet window. In the new versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox you can clear the history.

Many people get viruses on the computer when they are downloading games, music, or videos. It a computer gets a virus it destroys the computer. It does it really fast.

My computer got a virus about three weeks ago. So we had to format the computer to get rid of it. But after the computer was formatted it became way slower than it used to be. Hackers are all around the world. So you have to be careful!

Microsoft Excel test......................Oh my god! Am I ready?

22/01/07

Today we had the Microsoft Excel test! In my opinion this test was easier the ones that we had so far. Hopefully I'll get a perfect score. God only knows. The test had very basic questions which we reviewed thousand times. The only thing we did today was the test. Great big BYE to all my anonymous readers. Wait a minute, it's MONDAY! There's still 4 more days left till the weekend. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

Talking on the phone! Yay!!!!...........Watch out all of you out there........ You're next!!! Always pick up when I call........ OR ELSE

19/01/07

Today we learned about V.O.I.P. What exactly is that? Well, V.O.I.P stands for "Voice Over Internet Protocol" It is used to talk to a person from a computer.

This is how it works:

When you dial through V.O.I.P it first connects to a computer in the local area of the person that you're calling to. Then that computer connects to a local phone line. This allows you to talk to that person. Skype is one of the programs which you can use to call someone that way. Calling through Skype is way cheaper than calling long distance over the phone. For Skype you just have to pay $15 a year. Now how cheap is that?

That's pretty much what we did today. Ms.Griffiths said that we have a test on Excel on Monday. I have 2 days to get ready for that test. I already know most of the stuff. I just need to review everything. Good luck for me on the test.

Jobs, Works, ALREADY?????

17/01/07

Today we worked on our budgets. In the beginning, Mr. Case showed us a budget of a person that is the same age as us. It was sad. I would never get of the house right now after seeing that budget.

The job I choose is Psychiatrist. After taxes and total expenses, I would save about $5,121 each month. That's really good. This mini project was helpful because we got a chance a think ahead about the future.

Some of the other jobs that my friends choose are computer animators, cardiologist, bank robber, etc. That's mostly what we did the whole class.

Le Papillion.......... munch, munch, munch

16/01/07

Today me and my academic class was on a field trip. We went to downtown Toronto for a French field trip. It was to a French style restaurant called "Le Papillion Restaurant" I had fun and up to me and food was GREAT!

Since Mr. Case was on the field trip with us, I thought that the other people in the class wouldn't do anything new but they actually did. Ms. Griffiths said that the class was asked to make a budget in Excel.

First we were supposed to go to the internet and find the salary of an occupation that we would like to have. Then we had to calculate the expenses (ex. rent, entertainment, food, etc) and minus that from our salary and see how much we save each month. We were also supposed to calculate the tax for our salary.

The job I choose is Psychiatrist. After taxes and total expenses, I save about $5,121 each month. That's really good. This mini project was helpful because we got a chance a think ahead about the future.

Powerpoint........... Again and Again

15/01/07

Today we learned how to insert charts into Powerpoint. Well, there are two ways to do this. The geeky way and the lazy way. The lazy way would be just copying the chart and pasting it to Powerpoint. But the bad thing about that is if you make any changes in the numbers then you have to do the chart that you pasted in Powerpoint all over again. So today we are going to look at the "geeky way" This is a good way because if you make any changes in the data and those changes will be made on the chart on Powerpoint too! Cool!!!!

Inserting a chart into Powerpoint:

1. Type in your data
2. Highlight the data that you have typed
3. Go to insert
4. Scroll down and click on Chart
5. Select your favourite type of graph
6. Before pressing finish click on "As New Sheet"
7. Press finish
8. Now your chart should appear on a different sheet
9. Save it
10. Open up the Powerpoint document
11. Go to insert
12. Scroll down and click on Object
13. Click on "Create from file"
14. Browse and find your file
15. Click on "Link to file"
16. Press o.k

Now the chart that you have saved on Excel should appear on the Powerpoint screen. It might be a long process but it's worth it. After this Mr. Case told us to make a chart and insert it into Powerpoint and see if it works. Mine worked. Yahoo!!!!!!!!!

Graphs.................. Going back to Gr.2! YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!

10/01/07

Today, we learned how to make charts in Excel. I learned how to make actual graphs in grade 2 but grade 6 is when I learned it in Excel. So this lesson was just a review for me.

To make a chart you have to:

* Type in your data/information first
** Highlight the data you have typed then go to Insert and press on Chart
*** Choose you favourite type of graph
**** Fill in all of the information that it's asking you
*****After you have finished filling out all of the information click on finish

After learning about charts we were supposed to pick a topic of our choice and make a chart in Excel. My topic is "Who is most likely to be kidnapped by aliens" That's pretty much how the class went!

Not to fear! Microsoft Excel is here!

08/01/06

A big HEY to all of the anonymous people who's reading my blog. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!! Even though it's kind of a late wish! I haven't made any New Year resolutions. I'm already great.

Today we learned about Microsoft Excel. It was pretty cool. It was cooler than any of the other Microsoft Office programs. First we were given a lesson, followed by a mini assignment. Down below you can see some things we learned today.

In Excel there are 3 different sheets. Those three sheets made together is called a book. If three sheets is not enough and you want to add another sheet you can go to Insert and select worksheet.

Each of the box that's on the sheet is called a cell. Each cell has it's own name (ex. B6)

There are three different kinds of information which you can put into a cell. They are..........
Text String: can be either writing or a number
Formula: something used to figure out the answer (* it has to start with =) (ex. =3+5)
Value: Something you can do math to
Mr. Case said that these are some terms that are going to be on the test.
Interesting Info.
* Each of the cells are like calculators, you put in the formula and it will give you the answer
** Even if you change one tiny number it will change your whole document, so it's good to have a dummy document
Like always we were given a mini project after the short lesson. It's not actually a project though. We had to make a chart with our real term one marks. Have a great day!
